Let's start off with the drains. Most homes have either ABS PVC or cast iron drain pipes and vents. These pipes are connected to all the fixtures in the home such as toilets sinks, bathtubs, and showers. When the fixture is used the waste is carried inside these drain pipes that have a slight slope to them down the main drain up until it reaches the municipal drain under the street. Then you’ll find clean outs which will give you access to pipes in case there is blockage. Most homes in Temecula also have it outside so it's easy for the plumbers to access them.

Now on to the venting. For these fixtures and drains to function adequately, the system needs to be properly vented. When a toilet is flushed for example, the water pushes the air downstream causing a negative pressure behind it. The vents are what will equalize this change in pressure to prevent things like gurgling and p traps being siphoned out which would allow for sewer gases to find their way inside your home. These are situations when you probably should call us right away! These vents get their air through the roof and need to stay clear from bird nests and debris. Another important thing this vent serves is to relieve any pressure buildup inside the actual municipal sewer line. Some cities had their manhole covers blast off 50 feet in the air because rats would chew on electrical wires and would in turn create a spark and ignite the methane gas inside the sewers. So the vent minimizes the chance of this happening.

As for rainwater management, in the past, rain water and sewage was combined. Meaning the rainwater went to the same sewer as the waste from your house. Since then they've been separated to make water management easier. So when it rains, all of this water has to go somewhere. The rain that falls on the houses’ roof trickles into the gutters then gutters job is to divert the water away from the house to prevent water and filtrations. So what most people do is install a 5-foot piece onto the downspout so the water has somewhere to go. Other people prefer recovering this water in barrels to use as non potable water to water their plants and flowers. And some actually connect them to the weeping tile or French drain. The French drain is the corrugated pipe that runs around the houses footing to catch any excess water in the ground. The problem when doing this is that the municipal drain could get overloaded very quickly and overflow. So it's best to invest in a rainwater collection system or to just let the soil absorb the water if possible. So where does all of this waste and rainwater go? Once it's in the city’s hands, both of these services head down the road which eventually need to be lifted at a lifting station which pumps the storm and waste water back up so they don't go too deep. The rainwater dumps itself into a nearby river and the waste continues to the sewage treatment plant where it passes through multiple filters and treatment stages. After which its released back into the nearest river. And the cycle continues. The water from the river is filtered and pumped into the city's main as potable water which is safe to drink.

Step 1
You will need a plunger some rubber gloves a wire coat hanger some old newspapers. You may also need a flexible cleaning tool. Step 2 With clogged toilets a blockage is usually caused by something of an unusual shape such as a diaper, a toy, or an air freshener. Although often toilets can just get clogged with too much toilet paper. Unclogging a toilet is easy but it is a dirty job so make sure you put on a good pair of rubber gloves before you start. Step 3 Do not keep flushing. If you think your toilet’s clogged up, don't keep flushing it. Chances are it will overflow and flood the room. Step 4 Put some old newspapers or something you’re willing to throw away to protect your bathroom floor in case of spillage. |

Step 5
Remove some of the water. If your toilet is already full of water, you should remove some into a bucket. Use a bowl or a jug to scoop the water out and then pour it into the bucket. Step 6 Begin plunging with a plunger. Press down firmly then pull upwards slowly. Keep doing this until you start to hear the water going down the pipes and feel the toilet unclog. You will probably need to do this about 10 times. Pushing down and pulling up will create suction inside the plunger head which will draw out the blockage and encourage it to go down the pipes. Step 7 Wash the plunger. You must wash the plunger after using it. Step 8 The coat hanger method. If you have not been able to clear the blockage by using the plunger alone, you could try using a wire coat hanger. First of all unravel the wire coat hanger. Move the wire in and out in a circular motion in order to loosen the blockage and encourage it to go down the drain. |

Step 9
If the blockage is being particularly stubborn and both the plunger and the wire have failed to dislodge it, you may need a flexible cleaning tool, which you can get from most home improvement stores, to reach further into the pipes. The flexible cleaning tool can be inserted straight into the toilet. Push the flexible cleaning tool down until you can feel the blockage. Move the tool around inside the bend to clear it. Step 10 Flush the toilet once you think the blockage is cleared. Flush the toilet to test if your handiwork has paid off. Step 11 Disinfect the toilet. Pour a bit of household bleach or disinfectant to clear and disinfect any remaining residue in the bowl. |

Tip 1: Never pour fat, oil, or grease down the drain.
Fat doesn't go down the drain. What happens is even though they may be in its liquid form whenever it is going down the drain, it's going to solidify somewhere in your pipes which could restrict the water flow going through the pipes and cause a backup. This could cause significant damage if left unchecked. So make sure that doesn't happen. By simply avoiding pouring down fat, oil, or grease oil down the drain. Tip 2: Use strainers on your drains. We're not just talking about your kitchen drain. Don’t forget about your bathroom drains too. Let’s think about what happens in the bathroom as we take a shower or take a luxuriously relaxing bath. Unless you have some kind of hair that never falls out, most of our hair is going to come off. As we're shampooing and conditioning our hair, hair is going to go down that drain. When enough hair goes down that drain, it’ll clog that drain. So make sure to simply put a strainer down so that you can keep anything from going down the drain that shouldn't, like debris, hair, or anything else that should not be going in there. |

Tip 3: Treat your garbage disposal right. Your garbage disposal in the kitchen is like your best friend. But how many of us go in every single day and pour old coffee grounds in there and flip on the garbage disposal? I don't know about you but we see people do that all the time! To maintain the health of your garbage disposal make sure to turn the cold water on first and let it run for about five to ten seconds before turning the garbage disposal on. After that, just let the water run for another two to three seconds while you're pouring whatever you’re pouring into the garbage disposal. Let the garbage disposal run for another ten to fifteen seconds before turning it off. Let the water run for another ten to fifteen seconds. Why all this preparation of running water before and after turning the garbage disposal on? By running the cold water, it'll help any of that fat, oil, and grease that may have gone down into your garbage disposal. The cold water will solidify that fat, oil, and grease to ensure they could just quickly pass through. Or alternately, you can scoop them out and throw them in the trash. Another genius plumbing hack is to slice up some citrus wedges, like orange or lemon, whatever is available to you. And every couple of weeks put them with some ice into your garbage disposal and let it run. That helps sharpen the blades and the citrus will make your garbage disposal smell lemony fresh. Another important thing to treating your garbage disposal right is not to grind old chicken bones, pork bones, steak bones, or any kind of bones in the garbage disposal. Simply put, use common sense on what can or cannot go in your garbage disposal. |

Prevent clogging up the toilet. In a typical home, the toilet can take a beating just from daily use. More so in commercial buildings. So just make sure that no one dumps in the toilet anything other than regular toilet paper or flushable wipes. As Temecula plumbers who have been doing this for a long time, we have seen it all!
