The most frequently used drain in the house is your kitchen sink drain.  People put all sorts of food and grease down this drain.  Garbage disposals are meant to chop food up to small enough pieces to pass through the drain.  Unfortunately people often abuse this and assume that they can put whatever down the garbage disposal and it will handle it.  Not true.  Garbage disposals cannot handle much.  Every plate should have the food scraped off it so only small amounts of debris enter disposal.  The garbage disposal will grind up food but the holes are small that the water must pass through.  So things like rice, fruit, egg shells, vegetables, etc. will clog these holes and jam up disposal. 

A good tip is, every once in a while, put a bunch of ice into the garbage disposal. Turn it on and run cold water and pop it with garbage disposal running.  The ice will sharpen the blades and scrape the side walls of the pipes on its way out.  It is also important to limit the grease.  Grease is thick and will coat the inside of the drains.  Over time, grease stoppages can occur and they are harder to clear than food stoppages.
